Warm weather doesn't only bring out the flowers.
The Winnipeg chapter of Critical Mass - a leader-free group of non-motorist travellers - held its monthly ride this afternoon to celebrate alternative transportation.
It was the 13th consecutive ride for the local group, which just completed its first cycle of year-round trips and whose mission, members complain, is misunderstood.
"We're celebrating the alternative to the car and we're against pollution," says Tim, a taxi-driver-turned-cyclist who did not want his last name published.
"I think bikers should have as many rights as motorists, because I pay taxes, too."
Approximately 40 cyclists turned out today - nearly twice as many as last month. Their route from Central Park to Old Market Square had the usual Big Brother-esque police escort.
Riders who spoke to winnipegFIRST.ca say the trip was primarily incident free.
That's in sharp contrast to some trips last summer where members scuffled with police before being taken into custody and sparked public wrath by allegedly blocking the path of an ambulance.
As a result, riders say they have become frustrated by the "crazy anarchist"-label mainstream media and mass society have slapped on them, and are reluctant to be interviewed or provide their full names.
"People see Critical Mass and assume we're just anarchists on wheels," says Donna, who did not provide her last name for that reason.
"We risk our lives on our bikes every day riding to try to help the environment," she adds.
Sheri, my husband goes biking throughout the city sometimes, but I don't have the berries for it. Between the roads and the cars trying to run you off the road, I just don't find it any fun.
If cyclists expect the same privilages as vehicle drivers, they should be paying for licenses and insurance and should be subject to the same penalties as vehicle drivers when traffic infractions occour. Most don't stop at Stop Signs and many drive between vehicles and curbs and still expect drivers to give up a lane to them.
I'm not so sure that a vehicle incapable of traveling at the same speeds, incapable of causing even close to the same amount of damage as a car should be subject to paying the same amount for licensing and insurance.
If it were possible, I'd support having bicycle only lanes to alleviate the hazards to both parties, funded in part by a separate and distinct insurance and licensing system.
Bikes are far easier on the infrastructure, better for the environment and if they had their own lanes, would ease traffic congestion.
In many European countries, they have bicycle routes through the city, allowing someone to get virtually anywhere without having to share the same roads with hostile SUV's, hurried cab drivers and (if in Charleswood) suicidal deer.
Anyone else have a certain Queen song in their head now? ;)
well said Sherri! Cyclist dont cause nearly as much damage as motorists. Im sure the statistics are staggering to support this fact. Cyclists DO have to pay fines when traffic infractions occur!, if the cops want to waste their time rather than fighting REAL crime.
Driving a vehicle is like being behind a weapon everywhere you go. Riding on a cycle is so much fun! (When your not watching out for oblivious drivers trying to push you off the road 80% of the time)
I look forward to the next ride! I hope the weather is nice!!
Thanks Matt!
Though cycling to work is not realistic for everyone, it would be nice to have the option promoted through making the streets safer for cyclists and motorists alike.

I don't understand the comment, and the website you listed is not their official website. Their 'official' website is listed in the article.
Alex,
When I read the article initially, I somehow missed the link provided. The site I provided is their old one, and linked to through their current page.
As for my comment, it just seemed a little strange that a group of cyclists would generate so much police focus.

I'd love to cycle in the city, but navigating our roads seems more suicidal than Kool-aid and Nikes.
