T.J. Wiebe's family raises funds for drug awareness

Karen Wiebe hopes a celebration of her murdered son's life will help at-risk youths from facing the same fate.
The first annual T.J.'s Gift Gala was held earlier tonight to raise funds for a program named in memory of 20-year-old T.J. Wiebe, who was abducted and killed four years ago in what police suspect was a drug-related murder.
"It's another step in teaching kids about drugs," says Karen Wiebe, who put on the gala with her husband Floyd Wiebe at Canad Inns Polo Park.
"All the kids that go into the program have to take a drug-free oath, so it's another prong in the fork of dealing with drugs and hopefully one more thing in saving a few kids."
Wiebe's body was found frozen in a field in February 2003, where police say he was left for dead after being severely beaten and stabbed with a chemical-filled syringe. Three men have been convicted for Wiebe's murder.
After his death, Wiebe's family began raising money for the T.J. Wiebe Educational Awareness Fund, which supports drug awareness programming in the Louis Riel School Division.
Karen estimates 650 people attended the event, which exceeded the family's expectations. Even NDP Leader Gary Doer and Tory Leader Hugh McFadyen popped in.
"That's what we were hoping for," she says. "The first time you do something you never know what you're going to get. It's all for a cause, though."
