Police chase ends in drug arrest

What began as a routine traffic stop of a car believed to be carrying drugs turned into a high-speed chase last night.

Police pulled over a car being driven by a 19-year-old man around 8 p.m. yesterday at Main Street and Higgins Avenue.

Police spokesperson Const. Jacqueline Chaput says when police approached the car the suspect reached for a knife, forcing officers to use a Taser on him.

The Taser didn't have the desired effect, however, and the suspect drove away, dragging an officer behind the car. The officer freed himself and wasn't injured.

The driver sped away, driving erratically until running a stop sign and colliding with an unmarked police car at Austin Street and Jarvis Avenue.

The driver started to run away, but was eventually arrested by police. Police allege that he was carrying cocaine and marijuana, as well as a significant amount of cash, Chaput says.

Police then searched the suspect's home and found more drugs and cash, Chaput alleges.

David Dondo has been charged with drug trafficking and possession, as well as numerous weapons and dangerous driving offences.
