Modest Mouse Rocks Burton Cummings Theatre

The 7th of November wasn't a typical Wednesday. It was a Wednesday night that a group of Modest rodents dropped by the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg's downtown. Modest Mouse attracted an almost full crowd and brought guest bands Man Man and Love as Laughter to help them rock out the Burton Cummings Theatre. Like any good band does, Modest Mouse made the crowd wait in anticipation for them to play on stage. Once on stage they managed to captivate the audience with every note they played and blind half the audience with their overly bright stage lights every time the music picked up. Overall it was an enjoyable concert.

Hmm... well, first off, I have to say that the sound sucked last night. We were slightly off centre of the stage and the mix was horrific. So that didn't help my impression of the show.

However, I do think that the lead singer, Isaac Brock was having a bad drunk last night. His behaviour towards the crowd was terrible. At on point, he said "... I'll fucking kill you." to a guy up front who had been asking for various songs all night. It was pretty harsh.

They also made the crowd wait over 60 minutes between Man Man's set and their appearance. If you have been to enough rock shows, this is usually because someone is passed out or missing.

Musically, they played through their entire catalog. Songs from early albums to the hits, like Float On, from 2004s Good News For People Who Like Bad News and Dashboard from 2007s We Were Already Dead Before The Ship Even Sank. The rest of their 70 minute set skipped around and highlight some terrible diction by Isaac who was pretty much unintelligible in both his singing and during the two times he addressed the crowd.

Once they wrapped, the made the crowd wait another 15 minutes before they came back out for a hard rocking, borderline unlistenable 3 song encore.

Perhaps I was expecting too much, but I would have to say this show was more like a 2/5 stars for me.

Her title is a little weak and I missed Man Man, but I would agree with Melissa at the Free Press on her review. She was a little generous with the stars though.

At least I can say that Love and Laughter / Man Man was a suitable & entertaining warm up act for Modest Mouse.

Yes, he did say that...after someone threw something on the stage.

Ah. Ok. I missed something getting thrown on the stage. That makes a little more sense.

Even still, it sure seemed like they were not enjoying themselves. If their tour continues along those lines, I would have to guess they are headed for a break-up, or at least a long hiatus.

Here's my review. It's likely too long to post here. Comments welcome.
