The Manitoban music community is sending some of its prairie spirit to Cannes, France. Nine local industry professionals and one artist will head overseas on January 26 for the 42nd edition of MIDEM, the world's biggest music business conference.
Three hometown acts have been nominated for five trophies at the third annual Canadian Folk Music Awards (CFMA). Awards will be handed on December 1, 2007 in a gala hosted by CBC’s Shelagh Rogers and Québec artist Benoit Bourque at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Québec.
Plenty of Manitoba acts will be in Moose Jaw, SK when the 2007 Western Canadian Music Awards kick on on October 18. The fifth annual event features a three-night music festival, including showcases by 14 homegrown bands and solo artists spanning a variety of genres. They'll be joined by over 40 performers from B.C., Albert, Saskatchewan, and the Yukon.
The local music scene is coming together to help out one of its own this week. On October 18, several of Winnipeg's top acts will put on a concert in support of professional drummer Christian Dugas.
Eight Manitoba acts are heading east to London, Ontario to take part in the annual Ontario Council of Folk Festivals (OCFF) Conference October 11-14. Showcasing acts include some of Manitoba best up-and-coming as well as established artists.
It has been 20 years since MANITOBA FILM & SOUND, MARIA, and the Manitoba Motion Picture Industry Association (MMPIA) were established. Since then, the Manitoba film and music industries have seen dramatic growth and significant accomplishments, making Manitoba a true artistic destination on the world stage. These developments are due in large part to the existence of each of these three organizations, which have been instrumental in the continued success of our arts industry on the local, national, and international fronts.
